Why Consumption Hurts Your Creativity — And How To Fix It

In the 21st century we now connect and consume more than ever before. Since the web 2.0, our new found freedom through technology has paved the way for a hyper connected society, whereby every means-to-an-end is made available in the palms of our hands.

The story of our daily lives is now broken down into micro moments, timed to perfection. After all, that’s the beauty of technology — we can jump shift our attention the moment we feel bored.

One minute you’re reading this article, the next — you’ve one-click purchased new shoes on Amazon, and later — a quick Insta story of the new ice cream shop down the road. Followed by just a few minutes browsing Faceboo — ooh, where did the hour go??

Let me now post a question… Have you every stopped to think about how the growing inflow of distractions and decisions can affect how we work, think, and more importantly — create?

We’re all creative. We just don’t all express it.

One of the greatest gifts we have is to create. Whether you think you’re creative or not — you really are. Everyone is creative in some shape or form. Our ideas, our way of thinking, we all have a unique gift of creativity inside us.

The world needs creators, people who can put pen to paper, words to song and ideas to reality. People who dare to see a better future, and tred a new path forward for others to follow.

Creativity isn’t just found in a painting… It can be song, dance, writings, bridges, medicine, products, policy, new ideas, new ways to help people and improve the world. Creativity is expressed through our unique gifts, talents and calling.

But are we creating an environment that allows creativity to flourish?

Are you consuming more than you create?

Have you ever felt the sting of being out of focus when it comes to doing meaningful work or being creative? Designers, musicians and artists feel the pain. But remember, we’re all creative — so we all face…
